Staycations Across the UK This August Bank Holiday Drive Over Four Billion Economic Boost

As 11.2 million Brits prepare for staycations this August bank holiday weekend, the UK tourism industry is set to receive a significant economic boost. According to the latest VisitEngland trip tracker survey, these domestic holidaymakers will spend an estimated over four billion, which marks an increase from last year’s figure of 11 million staycationers.

This surge is seen as a much-needed uplift for the domestic tourism sector, which had faced challenges earlier in the year.

The 2025 data shows a slight increase in the number of people planning an overnight trip in the UK over the August bank holiday compared to last year. The number has grown from 11 million in 2024 to 11.2 million in 2025. Notably, this is an increase from 9.7 million holidaymakers in 2023, highlighting a positive trend in UK domestic tourism. This rise in holidaymakers is expected to help boost the tourism industry, providing much-needed financial support across various regions and local businesses.

However, despite the increase in bookings, domestic overnight trips overall saw a 5% decrease from 32.6 million trips in 2024 to 31.1 million by the end of May 2025, according to VisitEngland’s year-to-date statistics. This underscores the importance of the August bank holiday for a sector that is still recovering from fluctuating tourism trends.

The top destinations this August bank holiday include well-loved spots like Cornwall, Glasgow, The Gower, and Cumbria. These locations are renowned for their breathtaking coastlines, countryside, and cultural attractions. From Cornwall’s beaches to the vibrant city life of Glasgow, these destinations offer something for every type of traveler. Whether it’s exploring art galleries, enjoying a food scene, or relaxing on the stunning coastlines, the UK has a wide array of options that cater to different tastes and budgets.

With the growing demand for staycations, British destinations are seeing increasing numbers of visitors, giving local businesses a significant financial uplift during the holiday weekend. As families, couples, and solo travelers head to these top destinations, the domestic tourism industry is expected to see substantial benefits in terms of both jobs and economic growth.

Staycations are not just a break for UK residents but are also vital for the local economy. The £4.1 billion boost to the economy this bank holiday weekend highlights how tourism continues to be a major contributor to the UK’s economic growth. Local businesses in popular destinations will directly benefit from the influx of visitors, with many relying on the summer holiday period to recover from challenging times earlier in the year. Additionally, the tourism sector will see job creation as more businesses and attractions open to accommodate the surge in demand.

The survey also revealed that 7.3 million people are still undecided about their bank holiday plans, largely due to financial concerns and uncertainty over the weather. Many Brits are waiting to see if they can afford the trip, or if any special offers or deals arise closer to the date. This indecision reflects ongoing economic concerns stemming from the cost of living, with many travelers looking for affordable travel options and seeking to save on accommodation, activities, and dining out.

However, despite these concerns, the desire for a holiday getaway remains strong, with many still eager to explore the beauty of the UK. Businesses across the country are hopeful that these last-minute bookings will provide a vital economic boost before the summer ends.

As VisitEngland highlights, this August bank holiday is not just an opportunity for tourists to explore the UK’s wonderful destinations, but also an important time for local communities to gain financial support. The domestic tourism sector has faced mixed fortunes in 2025, and the boost from staycations will help sustain the industry. Britons are encouraged to support local businesses, attractions, and events throughout the weekend, ensuring that the tourism sector continues to thrive and contribute to the economy well beyond the holiday period.

The August bank holiday remains a crucial time for the UK tourism industry, with millions of people opting for domestic holidays. As 11.2 million Brits take their staycations, they will contribute significantly to the £4.1 billion boost to the economy. This surge in domestic travel is a welcome relief for the tourism industry, providing a vital financial lifeline for destinations across the country, from Cornwall’s coastline to Glasgow’s cultural hubs. As the UK continues to recover from economic uncertainties, the importance of staycations has never been clearer.
