San Luis Obispo International Film Festival Announces 2026 Dates and Exciting New Additions

The San Luis Obispo International Film Festival SLOIFF for short just dropped the dates for its upcoming 32nd year. Get ready for six days of killer movies from April 23–28, 2026. Whether you’re a die-hard film buff, a pro in the biz, or someone dreaming of making movies, there’s something here for everyone. Expect a lineup packed with fresh voices, hot new trends, and stories that stay with you long after the credits roll. The festival will kick off with an Opening Night Reception inside the beautiful, historic Fremont Theater on Thursday, April 23. It’s the perfect chance to rub elbows with indie filmmakers and grab a front-row seat to the creativity that will shape the future of cinema.

In 2026, the festival will introduce two exciting new additions to its programming. A new Episodic category will join the lineup, reflecting the evolving landscape of storytelling in film. With the rise of serialized content through online platforms and broadcast television, this category will provide a stage for episodic series in both fiction and non-fiction formats. The festival aims to celebrate the growing demand for episodic storytelling, which has seen significant popularity over the past decade. Filmmakers can submit multiple episodes, as long as the total runtime doesn’t exceed 40 minutes, or submit a single episode of up to 30 minutes.

Another new feature is the Best Genre/Horror Film award. Building on the success of the festival’s Red Eye Cinema programming, which has tested the audience’s appetite for genre and horror films over the last five years, this new award category highlights the increasing quality and demand for independent horror and genre works. With these additions, SLOIFF continues to innovate and expand its reach within the global film community, embracing fresh ideas while keeping its signature spirit of celebrating creative expression alive.

Aside from its traditional categories of narrative features, short films, documentaries, and more, the festival promises to be an immersive cultural experience with several key highlights. The Surf Nite is a highly anticipated event, bringing together surf culture and cinema in a unique celebration of coastal life. Additionally, the Music Video Showcase provides a space for artists and directors to showcase cutting-edge music videos that push boundaries and experiment with the audiovisual format.

The Central Coast Filmmaker Showcase, Cal Poly Short Cuts, and Filmmakers of Tomorrow offer an opportunity to spotlight local talent from California’s Central Coast as well as young filmmakers from around the globe, giving them a platform to showcase their work on an international stage.

San Luis Obispo, located halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, offers a unique and scenic backdrop for the festival. The charming, laid-back atmosphere of the city, combined with its natural beauty, provides the perfect environment for a film festival experience unlike any other. Filmmakers, visitors, and film enthusiasts can enjoy the city’s historic downtown, which features a variety of cafes, shops, and local attractions, alongside the stunning surroundings of California’s Central Coast.

The festival’s main venues include the Fremont Theater, a classic art deco venue, and the SLO Film Center at the Palm Theatre, where screenings, events, and exhibitions will take place. Visitors can easily explore the surrounding region, which offers stunning coastal views, wineries, hiking trails, and more.

For travelers planning to attend, the nearest major airport is San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport (SBP), which offers direct flights from major cities across the U.S. From the airport, it is a short drive to the festival venues. Additionally, Amtrak provides service to the area, offering another convenient transportation option.

The festival is open for entries in every category, now adding two fresh ones: the Episodic Award and Best Genre/Horror Film. Creators can send in their films via FilmFreeway until the deadline of November 30. It’s a global call, so makers from any country can take part, and the chosen films will screen at the event.
