IndiGo Expands Long-Haul Operations with Norse Atlantic Wet Lease Agreement for Four Aircraft

India’s largest airline, IndiGo, is accelerating its global expansion with a new wet lease agreement with Norse Atlantic Airways for four aircraft, supporting long-haul operations out of India. The partnership aligns with India’s growing aviation sector, backed by government initiatives such as the National Civil Aviation Policy (NCAP 2016) and the UDAN regional connectivity scheme.

Following an initial wet lease agreement for one aircraft, signed on February 6, 2025, Norse Atlantic has now confirmed an additional three aircraft for IndiGo. These aircraft are scheduled to enter service in the second half of 2025, supporting long-haul routes from India. The initial lease term is six months, with an option to extend up to 18 months, subject to regulatory approvals.

The first aircraft is on track for delivery and will commence operations on March 1, 2025, on IndiGo’s Delhi–Bangkok route. IndiGo and Norse Atlantic continue to explore deeper collaborations to enhance international connectivity.

IndiGo, India’s largest airline by passenger traffic and fleet size, is aggressively expanding its international footprint. The airline carried over 113 million passengers in 2024, according to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Traditionally focused on domestic and regional routes, IndiGo is now investing in long-haul operations to compete in global markets.

To support this expansion, IndiGo has placed a firm order for 30 Airbus A350-900 wide-body aircraft, with an option for an additional 70 aircraft. Deliveries are expected to commence in 2027, as part of IndiGo’s long-term strategy to strengthen its global aviation footprint.

The Indian government’s push for aviation sector growth has enabled IndiGo and other carriers to expand internationally. The UDAN scheme, aimed at enhancing regional connectivity, has helped increase domestic air travel, while policy reforms under NCAP 2016 have facilitated international expansion for Indian carriers. Additionally, India’s liberalized Open Skies policy, under bilateral agreements, supports strategic airline partnerships and global connectivity.

The IndiGo–Norse Atlantic agreement strengthens India’s position in global aviation. By utilizing wet-leased aircraft, IndiGo can expand its long-haul routes ahead of its Airbus A350 deliveries. The airline’s focus on cost-effective expansion strategies ensures continued growth while supporting India’s status as one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets.

With government-backed initiatives and a strong demand for international travel, IndiGo’s partnership with Norse Atlantic is expected to play a crucial role in India’s aviation future.
