Discover New England’s Hidden Gems: Northeast Kingdom, Chocolate Festivals, and Fluffy Chowder

As the summer months continue, New England offers plenty of exciting activities and destinations for travelers. From Vermont’s charming Northeast Kingdom to a chocolate lover’s paradise in New Hampshire, there are hidden gems waiting to be explored. Here’s a rundown of some must-visit spots, events, and tasty treats to enjoy before the season ends.

Vermont is renowned for its natural beauty and quirky charm, and its Northeast Kingdom is no exception. This region offers a perfect blend of scenic views, local culture, and unique attractions like the Dog Chapel and Museum of Everyday Life. To learn more about why this area is so special, I spoke with Loralee Tester, the director of the Northeast Kingdom Chamber of Commerce, who shared her top recommendations for visitors. Whether you’re exploring the area’s outdoor activities or enjoying local cuisine, the Northeast Kingdom promises a truly unforgettable experience.

Newport, Rhode Island, is famous for its rich history, sailing culture, and stunning mansions, but it’s also a great destination for budget-conscious travelers. For those looking to experience the best of Newport without breaking the bank, I’ve rounded up three low-cost activities that capture the essence of this coastal city. A stroll along Newport’s iconic Cliff Walk is a highlight and offers spectacular views of the coastline and historic estates.

If you’re a fan of chocolate, head to Waterville Valley, NH, on July 26 for the 26th Annual Chocolate Fest. This free event features chocolate treats, live music, and stunning mountain views in the Town Square. There will also be wine and chocolate pairings courtesy of Labelle Winery. Chocolate lovers won’t want to miss this sweet festival.

Also, the famous Cannon Mountain aerial tram at Franconia Notch State Park in New Hampshire is retiring this fall after 45 years of service. If you’ve never had the chance to take a ride, now is the time to experience the breathtaking views from the tram before it’s gone for good.

For those thinking ahead to winter, BermuidAir will begin nonstop flights from Boston to Anguilla starting in December. If you’re considering a Caribbean getaway, this new route makes it easier to escape the winter chill.

Canyon Ranch in Lenox, Massachusetts, has been named one of the best destination spas in the U.S. and is currently offering an incredible deal. Guests aged 13 to 21 can stay for free with a paying adult, making it an ideal time to experience this luxurious spa. To take advantage of the offer, bookings must be made by September 1 for stays by September 15.

Additionally, if you’re visiting Cape Ann, which includes the picturesque towns of Gloucester, Rockport, Ipswich, and Essex, be sure to use the Cape Ann Transportation Authority (CATA), which is offering free rides on all regular bus services, including seasonal summer routes, through December 31.

For art enthusiasts, Boston’s Seaport offers a creative way to spend your Tuesdays this summer. Every other Tuesday, from 6-8 PM, SIDE Presents hosts Summer Sketch, a free program offering live sketching classes. All art supplies are provided, and participants of all skill levels are welcome to join in. Upcoming sessions will be held on July 29, August 12 & 26, and September 9, so be sure to register in advance.

Whether you’re exploring the hidden treasures of Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, savoring the Fluffy Chowder in New Hampshire, or attending a chocolate festival, New England has a lot to offer this summer. With events, scenic destinations, and unique local flavors to enjoy, there’s no shortage of ways to make the most of the season. So pack your bags and hit the road to experience everything New England has to offer before the summer comes to a close!
